Set up OurWord 1.5

This page will guide you through the process of setting up OurWord version 1.5.

Very Important: This documentation assumes that your cluster has already been set up, with Scripture data initialized. Given the current changes going on in transitioning to version 2.0 during the spring of 2010, please contact John Wimbish directly for assistance, as an Internet repository must be set up. (And sorry, but at this point I am only able to support Seed Company, SIL and their partner's translation projects.)

Step 1 - Uninstall old versions

(Skip this step is this is a fresh installation.) The install program occasionally (and mysteriously) does not give expected results when OurWord is installed over a previous version, so for safety we first uninstall the old version prior to installing the new.

- Log into Windows as an Administrator.

- Through the Start menu, open the Control Panel.

- Open Add-Remove Software (Windows XP ) or Uninstall a Program (Windows Vista or Windows 7)

- Find OurWord on the list, select it, and uninstall it

- In the same way, uninstall Tortoise HG if you wish to upgrade it to the latest version.

Step 2 - Install Tortoise HG

The TortoiseHG install is not currently a part of the OurWord install, and thus must be done separately. It provides the basic functionality that OurWord uses to synchronize your project across the Internet.

- Navigate to the TortoiseHg download page by clicking here.

- You want to download the latest install file. At the time of this writing that is "tortoisehg-0.9.3-hg-1.4.3.exe." The latest version is indicated by the three numbers following "tortoisehg-", which in this example is "0.9.3."

- Be sure that you are logged into Windows with administrator priviledges

- At one point during the install you will be presented with optional additional items to install. You do not need the Help Files or the Mercurial book; but should keep everything else. You should also choose the option that prevents an item being placed into your Start menu, as you will not need to access TortoiseHg directly.

- TortoiseHg's setup will request that you restart your computer to complete intallation. Please do so.

Step 3 - Install OurWord

- Download the latest version here.

- Be sure that you are logged into Windows with administrator priviledges

- Just accept the setup program's defaults to the questions it asks.

- A restart after installation is not necessary.

Step 4 - Initialize from the Internet

At this point OurWord is now installed on your computer and ready to go. We now want to download your language data from the Internet so that you can start working.

a- If you are making use of Limited Users in your Windows setup, you should log in as a Limited User now.

b- The Setup program will have installed a desktop icon; if you have logged in as a different user you may wish to create a icon on that user's desktop. Refer to Windows documentation.

c- Launch OurWord either by clicking on the desktop icon, or from the Start menu.

d-Choose the New menu item under the Project dropdown, and from there the Initialize from an Internet Repository command.

Intialize from an Internet Repository menu command

This will bring up a wizard, in which you will need to enter the information about the repository. As I wrote above, currently I am managing this information, you will need to contact me for any usernames and passwords that you need. We do hope to find a home for this that individual projects can manage, but for now email me when you need to start a new user.(Apologies for the bother.)

e - Fill in the first page as shown in the drawing below. Note that most information is lower case, including the URL. Be very careful with this, as Linux servers are picky about case. The password is visible rather than stars, because I am more interested in your typing it in correctly than I am worried about people looking over your shoulder. The passwords I will send you will be strong ones, like “phUP8uZe” (with a combination of upper case, lower case, and numbers) which while admittedly are difficult to type; they are also nearly impossible for someone to guess.

f - The next page asks that you enter the name of the cluster. Here you enter it with normal capitalization.

Critically Important: For now (1.4e and until further notice) be careful to be consistent with the name's upper and lower case on all computers. There is currently a problem in TortoiseHg, which we learned about because we had "TopEnd" on one computer, and "Topend" on another ('E' vs 'e'.) It is vital that you choose one spelling and set up every computer that way. Otherwise, not only will your computer not work, but you will cause all other computers in your cluster not to work! a

Wizard Page One

g - The final wizard page allows you to specify a location for the data. In my effort to remove the complexities of file management from the user, I’ve given you only two choices. Personally, I tend to install the cluster under My Documents; and then when I’ve examined it with the Explorer to make sure it all looks correct, I then go to the Tools-Configuration menu to move it to My Application Data, where it is ever after hidden from over-zealous users (or their cousins or nephews) who might otherwise get in and mess things up.

Once you click on Finish, the Synchronize dialog will appear while the download takes place. Be patient with this, larger clusters over slow Internet connections can take a while for this initial download. Fortunately subsequent synchronizations will be faster because the system only sends/receives those things that have been changed.

Congratulations! Setup is complete. You should now be ready to begin working.
