Hint for Drafting Notes

Hint For Drafting notes are a means of providing additional information to the translator that might not otherwise be available from a reading of the source text alone.

In the situation that OurWord supports, a translator is drafting from a front translation; that is, a translation that has been carefully created as a high-quality source text for the daughters that are being drafted from it. In many cases, this front translation is published. For example, it might be the language of wider communication in the region in which the daughter is spoken.

In this situation it is common for the advisor to wish to give hints to the daughter team, without having to add that text to the front translation itself. Such hints might not be appropriate in the published front translation, as that language might not have the same linguistic or discourse characteristics as the daughter translation. So instead, OurWord supports a special "Hint For Drafting" note that appears only when a daughter is being drafted.

Hint For Drafting Note

For a translator, the note appears as to the left. There is an icon in the source text that signals that a note exists; and upon clicking on the note, the full text appears in a balloon popup.

In order to create a Hint For Drafting note, you must first go into the Tools-Configuration dialog, under the Notes page, and turn on the "Can create Hint For Daughter notes" option.

Thereafter, these Notes will appear in the popup that permits editing. By assigning it to the "Daughter Team", it will be treated as a Hint For Drafting Note.

If you wish to insert a note into the Front translation, you will need to bring it up in the four-column Consultant Preparation view. (You will also need to have permission to insert notes into the Front translation.) (NOTE: Insertion into the Front is not implemented yet.)
